Welcome to The Edward King House

The Edward King House Senior Center in Newport, Rhode Island, serves as a vital resource hub for adults aged 50 and above in Newport County. Established in 1969, the center offers a wide array of enrichment programs—over 94 annually—that support adult learning, independent living, and an enhanced quality of life. These programs encompass health and wellness, arts and culture, and are available both in-person and virtually, catering to the diverse interests and needs of the older adult community.
Housed in the historic Edward King House, a National Historic Landmark designed in the Italian Villa style by architect Richard Upjohn between 1845 and 1847, the center provides a welcoming and enriching environment. Through its diverse offerings, the Edward King House Senior Center fosters social connections, promotes well-being, and enriches the lives of older adults in the community.

The Edward King House Senior Center, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit service organization committed to serving the 50+ population of Newport County as a hub for resources and opportunities that support adult learning, independent living and an enriched quality of life.
The Vision
The Edward King House Senior Center forms collaborations and partnerships that encourage a life of self-direction, empowerment, enrichment and energy for the 50+ population. The King House builds a welcoming environment that values and respects every member of our community regardless of age, ability, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic background.

Our Home

One of the best kept secrets in Newport, the Edward King house was designed by noted architect Richard Upjohn in 1845 for wealthy China trade merchant Edward King. The Edward King House is one of the finest examples of Italianate Villa style of architecture in America. At Christmas time, 1912, the villa was donated to the City of Newport by the King Family for use by the citizens of Newport. It served as the public library until 1968 when it became the hub for Newport’s older adults.
